Yesterday was a busy day for Apple. In addition to announcing HomePod (2nd Generation), the company also released five trailers for upcoming Apple TV+ shows. I decided to check all five trailers out and I have a few thoughts that I wrote on each.
I’ll be the first to admit that I’m very behind on Apple TV+ content, but I am slowly starting to catch up. With these newer shows, I’m hoping to catch them as they air so I don’t wind up with an ever growing backlog. Of the shows I have watched, I can’t say there’s been a bad one yet and all of these trailers have presented some form of DNA that I’ve seen in other Apple TV+ shows. All of these are going to fit right in on the service, though there’s one I wonder if I’ll be able to get into as it’s a bit different from the content that I usually watch.
That’s enough backstory though, let’s jump into this Apple TV+ trailer roundup!
The Big Door Prize
I have no idea when this show was first announced, but the fifty second trailer for this upcoming Chris O’Dowd series gave me a lot to wonder about. The color scheme of the trailer is blue, featuring everything from blue lighting to blue butterflies. I don’t know much about this show outside of the fact that it’s based on a book and it seems like the central plot of the show is going to revolve around the Morpho Machine, which will tell you your life potential for a quarter.
There wasn’t much I saw that gave me many theories about what the show could be about, but I wonder what the big door prize is. I wonder if O’Dowd is playing a man who finds out his life has the best potential or if there’s a twist to the show that we’re just not being told yet. I’m hoping we’ll get to see a bit more footage before this one releases, but from what I have seen, this is one of a few shows in this trailer drop that’s going to have an aesthetic that I’m going to love.

Dear Edward
Dear Edward is an Apple TV+ series that tells the story of a young boy that survives a plane crash and the events following. The trailer for this one looks interesting, and I really enjoyed Connie Britton on American Horror Story but I’m not sure yet how I’m going to feel about this show. It definitely seems like something outside the scope of what I usually watch, as this seems like it’s going to be a very emotional show. That being said, the trailer did hint at a bit of mystery that may be enough to get me to watch it. It’s based on a novel, but I’m not familiar with the story. One other aspect that has me intrigued is that people are sending letters to Edward (which I assume is how the story gets its name). When the show hits the service I’ll check it out, but I’m curious to see if this show will be able to hook me in.

Hello Tomorrow!
“What if Billy Crudup sold timeshares on the moon?” I would have loved to have been at the pitch meeting when someone met with Apple and pitched this show for a TV+ series. Billy Crudup has been an absolute joy to watch on The Morning Show and I have no doubt that his charisma is going to bring so much to this show. In addition to Crudup, I’ve been a fan of Hank Azaria for as long as I can remember, as The Simpsons is a very important show to me. These are two actors I think I are going to work great together and have me laughing to no end.
But there’s more to this show than timeshares on the moon. I can’t recall the previous trailers, but I feel like we got a great look at the retro-futuristic world that Hello Tomorrow! is set in and I can’t wait to see the sets shine. I haven’t had a chance to watch a lot on TV+ yet (I’m working on making up for missed years) but one of the shows I have watched is Severance and I remember loving the retro aesthetic of the Lumen offices, so I can only imagine what a treat that’s going to be in a show that’s set in a bright and colorful world.
Personally, I’m also curious to see how this show is going to mix with me emotionally. Not because of the content, but because of my own personal struggles. In my 2023 State of the Blog, talk briefly about being fired from my job at a timeshare resort back in November. This is one of those shows I would have had no hesitation on were I still employed. Given the reality of the situation, I’m hoping I’ll be able to watch this as it airs because it looks like there’s going to be a lot in this show to enjoy.

The Reluctant Traveler with Eugene Levy
Is it possible to say a bad word about Eugene Levy? He’s one of those actors who’s virtually synonymous with comedy. It’s true, not every film a great actor does is going to be a winner, but sometimes even the bad ones can be guilty pleasure films. (For those wondering, I’m speaking specifically about the 2005, terrible but you can’t help but laugh, Samuel L. Jackson and Eugene Levy bomb, The Man.)
I know Apple TV+ has done a few reality programs before, but this is the first one that’s audibly made me say “Oh this is going to be good.” Just from Levy’s demeanor throughout the trailer, I know there’s going to be moments that are going to be fall out of your seat funny for all the right reasons. There’s one shot where he’s in a helicopter and based on the footage I’ve seen, I suspect I’m going to laugh myself sick.

Shrinking
Out of all the trailers that Apple released yesterday, Shrinking is the one that I’m most excited for. I had first stumbled upon this one when I was going though Apple TV+ adding stuff to my Up Next queue, as I’m very behind on a lot of shows from the service. As soon as I saw there was a show dropping with Harrison Ford and Jason Segel, I lost my mind.
Everything I’ve seen from this show so far makes it look like it’s going to be fantastic. We know Jason Segel is a funny man as a staggering amount of his work has been in comedy, but Harrison Ford is one of those actors I’ve always through was hilarious, even though he doesn’t play roles that are traditionally funny.
Shrinking streams on Apple TV+ Jan. 27th, 2023.
That about wraps it up for my Apple TV+ trailer thoughts for today! What was your favorite trailer that Apple released? I’d love to know. Leave the name of the show down in the comments below, as well as what you’re most excited about!
