Two of the best subscriptions I’ve ever purchased are annual access to Marvel Unlimited and DC Universe Infinite. Between the two, I have access to a massive library of comics from the two biggest publishers, which also just so happens to make up the majority of my comic book reading. DC Comics was a bit late to the party, but they brought one thing to iOS that the more established Marvel Unlimited didn’t: Home Screen widgets.
Sure,` DC’s offering is limited to jumping back into books that you’ve already opened, but it’s still something. Having a widget that’s not perfect is still a step above not having a widget at all. I was really thinking about this a lot the other day, though. It’s time for Marvel to make the jump and add support for widgets on iOS.
I don’t need Marvel to add a lot of widgets for Marvel Unlimited, but I can think of a few that would be fantastic.
Currently Reading
I think this one goes without saying. One of the first things you see when you open the Marvel Unlimited app is the books you are currently reading. While this would inevitably feel like a blatant rip-off of DC’s only widget type, it’s one that any app like this should have.
Random Issue
Something that Marvel Unlimited has that DC doesn’t is a Random Issue button. A quick press of the button will take you to a random issue of the vast catalog available in Marvel Unlimited. I feel like this would make a fantastic small Home Screen widget, perhaps set to auto-refresh every thirty to sixty minutes. It would make a great way to discover great new comics to read with minimal friction for sure.
Pinned Reading Lists
The last widget I’d really like to see Marvel Unlimited add is a pinned reading list widget. Marvel Unlimited has huge array of reading lists available that you can pin to the apps home page (I’m currently reading the Iron Man 2020 event this way). The reading lists available can be anything from an event, to a character showcase, to a guest pull list from Marvel’s accompanying podcast.
I think it would be fantastic to have a widget that either serves as a shortcut into one of your pinned reading lists or directly into issues in these lists.
I have no idea if Marvel will actually implement these widgets into their app, or any for that matter, but if they do, I think this would be a great place to start. What are some widgets that you would like to see Marvel add to their Marvel Unlimited app on iOS? Sound off down in the comments below!
