I’m Not Sure How I Feel About MagSafe Yet

Edit: This post was written yesterday and didn’t upload like I thought it did. I’ve chosen to leave it unedited as if it were properly uploaded when it was supposed to. Please enjoy.

Hope everyone’s having a great Tuesday. Today’s a very special day if you’re an Apple fan — it’s iPhone 12 video embargo day! That means that all of your favorite tech YouTubers are going to be uploading content based around the device (which it’s my understanding they received last Friday). And the content has already started coming.

The first two videos I saw of the day were from Unbox Therapy (presumably uploaded before the embargo lifted). It’s no secret that Apple never sends Lew review content but he does have models of the iPhone 12. That allowed him to do two videos this morning: one unboxing all the official Apple cases for the iPhone 12 and one going over the MagSafe charger that Apple is selling now.

After watching his videos, I’m not sure how I feel about MagSafe for charging and in general. As he shows in the video (at least with the cases) MagSafe doesn’t always have the tightest grip on the phone. Now, it’s very possible that his dummy unit doesn’t have MagSafe in it, and therefor, is only operating at half strength.

It’s still concerning to me, however, as the accessory I’m most hoping for to pair with my iPhone 12 Pro is a MagSafe base for my Baby Yoda PopSocket. After watching Lew’s video, I’m not sure that I’m inclined to trust a magnet to hold my PopSocket on my device, especially when I have it in the car. I do still need to watch all of the videos that were uploaded today by those who have the phone in hand and afterwards my opinion could change. In the meantime, this is something on the back of my mind.

On the other end of the MagSafe spectrum, it seems like (at the very least) Apple’s official charger has a pretty solid grip on the magnets in the MagSafe case — so much so that removing the phone from the charger is not a one-handed operation. I wonder if that’s going to be par for the course with every MagSafe compatible charger that comes out.

I really like the Samsung wireless charger that I’ve been using for the last several years, primarily because I can use it either laying down, or flip it up into a stand mode. I’m going to be inclined to wait for a MagSafe charger with that ability before I officially make the switch, but I can’t help but wonder if I even will then, if removing the charger from the phone means moving the whole damn charger.

Only time will tell.

On a final note, I got an email from Sprint this morning that my 128 GB Graphite iPhone 12 is ready to ship — it has two day shipping so I’m hoping I’ll have it Friday or Saturday (fingers crossed🤞). If I do get it Friday or Saturday, I’m going to try to film some kind of an unboxing video for my (rarely used) YouTube channel and I’ll also share a post with the video here.

I guess I’m going to have to bump up iPhone 12 case shopping. Right now I’m leaning towards the OtterBox Aneu which is available directly from Apple. 🤔
